La rue piétonne

This charming sunny shopping scene takes place in late July, early August. People are hot but, in the shade of the narrow pedestrian street, not bothered.

Despite the temperature, many people - most of them have been out and about since the cool of the early morning - wear jackets.

An old man will walk down this street shortly. He will come from the railway station at the top of the town. He will be hot from his journey and the leather band in his Panama hat will be slick with damp sweat.

He will look on the bustling town with a mixture of regret for the old centre he once knew and satisfaction at the buzzing life around him.

But it will be hard work for the old man, picking his way through the mass of people in the narrow street ...
