Le Château comtal

Look at the roof tiles they've put on those towers. Do you seriously think that medieval Languedoc would have imported slate?

Look at the square tower. The one without a roof at all. You know the legend, perhaps ...

At the siege that gave the town its name, Dame Carcas called back the Emperor Charlemagne who had struck camp and given up on ever taking the fortified city by force.

To their mutual surprise, the tall square tower known as the Tour Pinte bowed down to the emperor and removed its roof, like a polite chevalier removing his hat.

At this signal, both sides decided to call an end to the conflict. The gates of the city were opened and the city returned to its peaceful existence of before the siege.

For how long did peace reign?
