Harif the teacher

(dates not known)

Harif is a teacher, seer and wise man. He has knowledge of the spoken language and scripts of the ancient languages of the Middle East and North Africa. He is, perhaps, from the Holy Land.

It was in Jerusalem, the city of peace, that Harif met Bertrand Pelletier. Despite their differences - in age, race, position and religion - they were drawn to one another.

Harif is the Navigatairé – the leader – of the Noublesso de los Seres. He takes the decision to initiate Pelletier into the secret society in Jerusalem at the end of the twelfth century. When the armies of Saladin approach the Holy City in 1187, Harif sends Pelletier back to France to seek out another member of the Noublesso, Simeon the Bookmaker.

When war comes to the Pays d'Oc in 1209, Harif - now living in the foothills of the Pyrenees - instructs Pelletier to bring the precious parchments, concealed within three separate books, to the safety of the Labyrinth cave in the Sabarthès Mountains.

At the beginning of Labyrinth, Harif is already a very old man.
