Guilhem du Mas

(1185-1244)

Guilhem du Mas is a celebrated chevalier in the service of Raymond-Roger Trencavel, Viscount of Carcassonne, Béziers and Albi. Brave, flamboyant, skilled with both lance and sword, his reputation on the Jousting field is second to none. He is also quick tempered, arrogant and untried on the field of battle.

Guilhem is married to Alaïs, younger daughter of Bertrand Pelletier, intendant – steward – to the Trencavel household. He loves Alaïs, but is unable to stop his eye wandering. Despite his best intentions, he has allowed himself to become the lover of Alaïs' elder sister Oriane.

Guilhem is not a stupid man, but he is weak and this lays him open to blackmail. Having lost Alaïs, when she discovers his infidelity, Guilhem spends the rest of his life making amends.
