7. Stealing souls

Let's pretend that you are – at last – on the home stretch. Your story is almost complete. Your mind is full of connections – links between characters and places – and intricate timings of mystery and revelation.

But you need another character, someone who makes a late entry and turns the whole thing upside down.

You mind is too full! Who is it to be?

Go to a café and watch people. Listen shamelessly to their conversations. Jot down the words they use in the note book – remember, you always carry a note book – that never leaves your side.

Take those people home in your in your notebook. A characteristic here from a woman, a gesture from a man – soon that elusive character will begin to take shape behind your eyes.
